I believe that Hegemony, which refers to the dominance of one group over another, still takes place in today’s society. We have come a long way in our quest for equality in the workplace. However, we still have our issues when it comes to management dominating the workplace. Many employees feel they have no choice but to support managements’ rules, regulations, and many of their other practices. They are either fearful of stating their opinion or take for granted that they do or should have the right to have an opinion in their companies’ practices.
Don’t get me wrong, I believe there needs to be different levels of hierarchy in the workplace in order for a company to be successful and function properly. However, I also believe that employees should have the right to call out or question authority. Corporations may have benefited from listening to their employees concerns, views, ideas, suggestions, etc. in the cases of many of the struggling automakers, banks and mortgage companies. Many of the faltering companies would have suffered less had they listened more to their employees by checking their egos at the door.

I too think hegemony often takes place in todays workplace when it comes to management. Management does dominate the workplace and often times people are too scared to speak up to there boss even at the expense of the quality of the work they do. I also think you make a great point about the benefits of questioning authority in corporate situations. There has been so many instances I have heard of where questioning authority lead to innovation in the product or the way it is sold. Ultimately the corporation will benefit the most from this but it also will greatly help the moral of the workers for that company.
ReplyDeleteHegemony is one of the essential elements to build a good corporation, family, organization and many other groups. I believe in hegemony because it allow people to stick to rules and regulation. However, I also agree that it can get out of hands sometime due to the fact that some people abuse and use their power. My personal experience is that I was once asked to drop one of classes because it was conflicting with the work time. Although the manager was trying to make everyone's schedule to be less hectic as possible, some of us were stunned by it. My reaction was that it does not give the manager the right to ask someone, especially a student to drop classes so then they will have someone to work on certain time. It was inappropriate and I didn't agree to it. Hopefully no one will have to deal with such situation and keep in mind never to abuse the power that they have in work place.
ReplyDeleteHegemony as stated in the book as well as above "works most effectively when the world view articulated by the ruling elite is actively taken up and pursued by subordinate groups" in saying this,Hegemony can be looked at as a one sided deal. The organizational elites set these boundaries by embedding the corporate ideas into their employees from the beginning. This not only relates to employees but students, children and many more. When rules are put into effect to better someone or something they are essentially setting a form of control all individuals effected must abide by. In the work place it is abiding by the corporate goals and mission statement in all aspects of the job. Whereas in a family system, children must abide by their parents rules while both in and out of their household, and students must listen to their teachers rules while in their classroom. In simple terms Hegemony are "rules to live by" for certain aspects of each individuals life. By creating these rules it is giving the elite the upper hand and all of the control benefiting hopefully not only the company and clients but the employees and individuals themselves and same goes for a families and school hegemony.
